Valuing Multiculturalism
LET’S EMBRACE OUR NAMES CAMPAIGN
Problem
In Australia, many individuals experience unfair treatment and racism because of how they look or where they come from. Racism means that people of all backgrounds are not treated equally and do not have the same opportunities.
Key Insights
Australia is home to people who identify with more than 270 ancestries from all over the world.
87% of Australians think that it is good that our community is made up of people from different cultures
Australians without Anglo-Saxon names have to send up to 2/3rds more applications to get a job interview
Our Focus
People with ethnic names need to send out ⅔ more CVs to get a job interview compared to ones with an Anglo-Saxon name. Ethnic name is uncommon and unfamiliar. This causes people to change their names so they can be treated better. We want to encourage people to embrace their ethnic names, and also build an opportunity for people to understand what name means in a different culture
